Every three months we get a 5th Wednesday on the calendar, an opportunity CRYJ uses to hold Real Talk workshops on drugs and society. In these workshops, we widen our lens from personal experiences with substances and consider the societal ways in which drugs and alcohol are used, viewed, policed, and criminalized. Our drugs and society topics change each month; some examples include discussing the history of drug policy in the U.S., understanding zero tolerance policy in schools, and the use of psychedelics in therapeutic contexts.

At CRYJ’s Real Talk workshop on mental health and coping, we consider the impact that mental health struggles and stress symptoms such as anxiety, anger, irritability, and depression have on teens, as well as their peers and family. We also discuss the risks associated with leaning on substances as a form of self medication, and brainstorm alternative ways of taking care of ourselves and responding to mental health issues.
